Put the bag in and it detects it, vacuums and seals by itself, which makes it the easy pick for sealing meat and leftovers for the freezer. It comes with a roll and a starter set of bags. Remember Utah State University Extension's warning: vacuum sealing isn't a preservation method on its own, so food that needed the fridge or freezer still does.

Best for Easy, automatic sealing for the freezer

Good
  • Automatic bag detection
  • Roll and bags included
Worth knowing
  • Bulkier than basic sealers

Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you want to seal soups and liquids: a chamber sealer like the Avid Armor handles them.

A 130-watt double pump with dry, moist and double-seal modes and a gentle setting for soft foods. The double seal is worth having on bags headed for long freezer storage.

Best for Moist foods and a stronger seal

Good
  • Double pump and double seal
  • Moist and gentle modes
Worth knowing
  • Larger than slim sealers

Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you need to seal liquids: a chamber sealer.

Our verdict

A chamber sealer evacuates the whole chamber, so soups, stews and marinades stay in the bag instead of being pulled into the machine. It's the step up for people who seal a lot. As with any vacuum packing, Utah State says it isn't a preservation method by itself.

Best for Soups, marinades and high volume

Good
  • Seals liquids
  • 11.5 in seal bar for high volume
Worth knowing
  • Bigger and costs more than countertop sealers
  • Sold by Avid Armor through Amazon

Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you mostly seal dry or solid foods: a countertop sealer is enough.

The honest bit
Vacuum sealing is not preserving. Utah State University Extension says vacuum packaging can increase shelf life but is not a food preservation method by itself: a food that needed refrigeration or freezing before sealing still does, and removing oxygen can actually help botulism bacteria grow. Seal meat for the freezer, not the pantry.

Before you buy

Automatic or manual: automatic bag detection is easiest; one-touch sealers are simpler and cheaper.

Moist foods: a moist mode and double seal help with meat and marinated foods.

Liquids: soups and stews need a chamber sealer, or freeze them first.

Bags: check the roll width and whether the sealer has a cutter.

How we choose

We verify every product's specifications against at least two independent sources, re-check its US price and stock on a schedule where we can track it automatically, and cross-check safety-relevant claims against official guidance. Every review is labeled Researched or Used and reviewed by us: where we've bought a product, or been sent it free, and used it ourselves, its review says which; where we haven't, our verdict is a considered spec-and-evidence comparison, not a hands-on test — and commissions never change a ranking either way. Common questions

Can vacuum-sealed food be stored at room temperature?

Only if it was shelf-stable before sealing, such as dry goods. Utah State University Extension says vacuum packaging isn't a preservation method by itself; food that needed refrigeration or freezing still does.

Is a vacuum sealer good for long-term food storage?

For freezer storage, yes. For decades-long dry storage, Utah State describes Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers inside food-grade buckets; see our food storage containers page.

Can I vacuum seal liquids?

With a chamber sealer, yes. Countertop sealers pull liquid toward the machine, so freeze soups first or use a chamber sealer.
