Best emergency weather radios: NOAA alert and hand-crank (2026)
Ready.gov's basic kit asks for two things: a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert. They do different jobs: one wakes you when the National Weather Service warns your county, the other keeps you informed when the power and cell service are out.

Before you buy
For warnings at home, choose a radio with S.A.M.E. coding
You set your county, and it sounds only for warnings that cover you, so it isn't crying wolf for the next state.
For outages and go-bags, look for more than one way to charge: crank, solar and USB.
A crank alone is tiring; solar alone is slow.
Phone charging from a crank radio is a top-up, not a full charge
A 2,000 mAh battery is well under a full modern phone battery. Pair it with a power bank.
Check which radios alert by themselves.
Some crank radios only play NOAA broadcasts when you turn them on; their listings don't mention an automatic alert.
We verify every product's specifications against at least two independent sources, re-check its US price and stock on a schedule where we can track it automatically, and cross-check safety-relevant claims against official guidance. Every review is labelled Researched or Used and reviewed by us: where we've bought a product, or been sent it free, and used it ourselves, its review says which; where we haven't, our verdict is a considered spec-and-evidence comparison, not a hands-on test — and commissions never change a ranking either way. Common questions
What is a NOAA Weather Radio?
A radio that receives the National Weather Service's continuous weather broadcasts and warnings. Ready.gov's basic kit lists a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert.
What does S.A.M.E. mean on a weather radio?
Specific Area Message Encoding: you program your county, and the radio sounds only for warnings that include it.
Do I still need a weather radio if I have a smartphone?
It's a good backup. Phone alerts depend on cell service and battery; a NOAA radio keeps working on batteries or a crank when both are down.
Can a crank radio charge my phone?
Some can, as a small top-up. The Midland ER210 and RunningSnail here have 2,000 mAh batteries, which won't fully charge most modern phones.
