What the AQI categories mean

EPA's own descriptions, from AirNow's AQI Basics. The higher the AQI, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the health concern.

CategoryWhat EPA says
GoodAQI 0 to 50Air quality is satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk.
ModerateAQI 51 to 100Air quality is acceptable. However, there may be a risk for some people, particularly those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.
Unhealthy for Sensitive GroupsAQI 101 to 150Members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. The general public is less likely to be affected.
UnhealthyAQI 151 to 200Some members of the general public may experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.
Very UnhealthyAQI 201 to 300Health alert: The risk of health effects is increased for everyone.
HazardousAQI 301 and higherHealth warning of emergency conditions: everyone is more likely to be affected.

On a poor air day

EPA says AQI values at or below 100 are generally thought of as satisfactory. Above 100, air quality is unhealthy: at first for certain sensitive groups of people, then for everyone as the values get higher.

AirNow's Activity Guides explain ways to protect your health when the AQI reaches unhealthy levels. For wildfire smoke, AirNow points to its Fire and Smoke Map to check on smoke in your area. Your state, local or tribal air agency is the authority for air quality forecasts and advisories where you live.

Questions

What is the air quality in the US right now?

At our last check (Oct 31, 2026, 2:20 AM ET), 557 of the 727 areas with a current AirNow reading were Good, 169 Moderate and 1 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups or worse.

Where is the air worst right now?

St. Maries, Idaho (AQI 161, Unhealthy), at our last check.

What do the AQI colors mean?

EPA's AQI has six categories, each with a color: green for Good (0 to 50), yellow for Moderate (51 to 100), orange for Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (101 to 150), red for Unhealthy (151 to 200), purple for Very Unhealthy (201 to 300) and maroon for Hazardous (301 and higher).

Are these readings official?

They're preliminary. AirNow says its data get preliminary quality checks but not the full validation used for EPA's regulatory database, the Air Quality System, and are used only to report the AQI to the public. The readings come from the federal, state, local and tribal air agencies that report to AirNow.

How often is this page updated?

AirNow updates its data files several times an hour, and most readings arrive within about an hour of being measured. We read AirNow's file every six hours, so check AirNow or your local air agency for the latest hour.
