Best ice scrapers and snow brushes for your car (2026)
Ready.gov's car kit and the National Weather Service's both list a windshield scraper and brush, and the NWS says to "Make sure your vehicle is completely clear of ice or snow before starting the trip. Flying snow from cars causes accidents." This page compares scrapers and snow brushes sold in the US on length, head and build. We haven't used them ourselves; every figure is the maker's or the listing's.

Our verdictOur verdictResearched A telescoping pole with ten length settings, a pivoting brush head, a squeegee and a scraper that detaches. It reaches across a windshield and onto most of an SUV roof. The catch is that listing titles for AstroAI vary between 46 and 47 inches, so check the length on the page you buy from. Our verdictOur verdictResearched Hopkins' SubZero Crossover has a telescoping handle that reaches about 50 inches and a head that pivots, so you can push or pull snow across the roof. The scraper is built into the head. The catch is that the maker's own catalogue is old, so check the current listing, and the plastic scraper can chip on thick ice. Telescoping foam broom + scraper · 33 to 52 in (maker) · 18 in foam head, hard scraper (maker) · About 1.4 lb; 2-year warranty (maker) People who care about paint and want a soft foam head, not bristles | Telescoping foam broom + scraper | 33 to 52 in (maker) | 18 in foam head, hard scraper (maker) | About 1.4 lb; 2-year warranty (maker) | |
Our verdictOur verdictResearched Snow Joe's broom swaps bristles for an 18-inch foam head that pushes snow off paint and glass, on a pole that extends from 33 to 52 inches. At about 1.4 pounds it is easy to carry and has a bracket for the trunk. The catch is that foam is less effective on thick, heavy snow than a stiff brush, and the scraper is plastic. Best for People who care about paint and want a soft foam head, not bristles Good

Our verdictOur verdictResearched A plain 26-inch brush with a scraper at the other end and an ice breaker on the back. It does not extend, so it is easy to store but short for a pickup or SUV roof. The catch is that fixed length and the colour you get is random. Best for A simple, cheap tool kept in a small car Good

Before you buy
Length.
A compact scraper fits the door pocket; an extending brush reaches the middle of the roof and windshield on an SUV or truck.
Head.
A pivoting or wide brush clears snow fast; a foam head pushes heavy snow without scratching. Check the scraper blade's width and whether it has ice-chipping teeth.
Grip.
A foam handle is warmer and easier to hold in gloves.

We verify every product's specifications against at least two independent sources, re-check its US price and stock on a schedule where we can track it automatically, and cross-check safety-relevant claims against official guidance. Every review is labeled Researched or Used and reviewed by us: where we've bought a product, or been sent it free, and used it ourselves, its review says which; where we haven't, our verdict is a considered spec-and-evidence comparison, not a hands-on test. Common questions
Do I need to clear snow off my car roof?
Yes. The National Weather Service says to make sure your vehicle is completely clear of ice and snow before you set out, because flying snow from cars causes accidents. Some states fine drivers for it.
Will an ice scraper scratch my windshield?
A plastic scraper used on clean glass shouldn't. Grit trapped under the blade can scratch, so brush loose snow first. Don't use a scraper on tinted film or paint.
Can I use hot water to de-ice my windshield?
CDC says never to pour water on your windshield to remove ice or snow. Run the defroster and scrape instead.
What else should be in a winter car kit?
Ready.gov's list includes jumper cables, an ice scraper and a blanket; the NWS adds a windshield scraper and brush, and a compass and road maps. See our car emergency kits page.
