What moves these prices

EIA lists the reasons heating oil prices change. Demand is seasonal: even when crude oil prices are stable, home heating oil prices tend to rise in the winter, October through March, when demand is highest. The cost of crude oil changes with worldwide supply and demand. Competition in local markets varies, and consumers in rural places with fewer suppliers may pay more. The cost of delivering to remote locations varies too.

EIA adds that a large cold weather system can push prices up, sometimes sharply, because people use more fuel at the same time a winter storm interrupts deliveries, until new supply arrives. Propane prices, EIA says, are related to their sources, crude oil and natural gas, and to demand and supply.

If the bill is the worry

You don't need to buy anything because prices moved. The first step is help with the bill: LIHEAP and state programs can help with heating oil and propane, and our guide explains who qualifies and what to do first. A portable heater isn't a way around the price of heating fuel: it warms the space around it and runs on electricity you pay for too.

If you do use a portable heater, CPSC's advice is to keep it at least three feet away from drapes, furniture, bedding and other combustible materials to prevent fires. Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete burning of fuels including oil, kerosene and propane, so a working CO alarm matters in any home that burns them.

Before a winter storm

EIA notes that a winter storm can interrupt fuel deliveries just when people are using more. Check your tank level before a cold snap, and plan how you'd keep warm if the heat or the power goes out.

Questions

How much does heating oil cost right now?

$6.23 a gallon delivered, the US average in EIA's survey for the week of Oct 26, 2026. Of the states EIA surveys, the highest was Indiana at $6.50 and the lowest Nebraska at $5.72.

How much does propane cost per gallon?

$2.73 a gallon for residential propane, the US average for the week of Oct 26, 2026. By state it ran from $1.75 in North Dakota to $4.97 in Florida.

When does EIA update these prices?

From October through March, EIA publishes the data weekly, every Wednesday after 1:00 p.m. Eastern; in a week with a holiday from Monday through Wednesday, a day later. From April through September EIA collects the prices once a month, on the second Monday, so this page changes little in summer.

Why isn't my state listed?

EIA's latest survey publishes residential heating oil prices for 21 states and propane for 38. We show only the states EIA publishes and don't estimate the rest; EIA's regional averages cover the wider area.

Why is my dealer's price different?

These are averages across the dealers EIA surveys in each state. EIA notes that prices and service offerings can vary substantially between places, and that areas with fewer suppliers may pay more.
