Best thermal curtains for winter (2026)

The Department of Energy's advice for winter windows is free: "open curtains on your south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home, and close them at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows." Heavier, lined curtains make the second part work better.

Our verdict
Our verdictResearched

A lined, grommet-top panel pair in a standard size. The listing calls it thermal insulated and light blocking; NICETOWN's claims for light blocking differ across its own listings. A heavy lined curtain adds a layer over the glass but is not a seal.

Best for Bedrooms and living rooms that want darkness plus a heavier, lined curtain

Good
  • Standard 52 x 84 in size, pair included
  • Heavier lined construction for a cold window (listing)
Worth knowing
  • Light-blocking claims vary across NICETOWN listings
  • Heavy fabric needs a sturdy rod

Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you need a precise blackout percentage you can verify.

Grommet-top theater-grade blackout pair · 52x84 in each, pair (listing) · Blackout weave (listing) · Check label

The darkest, heaviest option for a bedroom, with a stated light figure

4.2
Our verdict
Our verdictResearched

Sun Zero's theater-grade pair with grommets. The listing says it is lab-tested to block 100% of light and reduce energy loss through windows by up to 50%, which is the maker's claim. The thick layers make it heavy, so check your rod.

Best for The darkest, heaviest option for a bedroom, with a stated light figure

Good
  • Full-blackout claim by Sun Zero (listing)
  • Thick construction for a cold window
Worth knowing
  • Energy and noise figures are Sun Zero's, not independent
  • Heavy, may need a stronger rod

Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you want light fabric that hangs easily on a thin rod.

Room-darkening thermal panel pair · 52x84 in panel pair (listing) · Thermaweave room-darkening fabric (Eclipse) · Machine wash gentle, cold, no bleach (listing)

A modest, no-lining-needed curtain for living areas

Eclipse's room-darkening panels, not full blackout: the weave itself blocks light rather than a separate liner. Eclipse says they help in winter and summer, which is a maker claim only. Listings put light blocking in the mid-90s percent, so some light remains.

Best for A modest, no-lining-needed curtain for living areas

Good
  • Single-layer, easy care (listing)
  • Pair in a standard size
Worth knowing
  • Room darkening, not full blackout
  • Energy benefit is Eclipse's claim

Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you need a full blackout for sleeping in the daytime.

Grommet-top thermal blackout panels · 52x84 in panel pair (listing) · 230 GSM polyester, thermal (listing) · Check label; listing says hand wash

Budget thermal curtains in a standard size

4.0
Our verdict
Our verdictResearched

A budget panel pair in polyester. The listing gives light blocking by color shade (up to 95% for dark, less for light colors), so a pale grey will let some light through. Deconovo's listings disagree on washing, so check the care label.

Best for Budget thermal curtains in a standard size

Good
  • Inexpensive pair
  • Light-blocking range stated by color (listing)
Worth knowing
  • Cloud grey blocks less light than dark colors (listing)
  • Care instructions conflict between Deconovo listings

Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you want a true blackout in a light color.

Thermal insulated blackout panels · 52x84 in panel pair (listing) · Black-backed polyester (listing) · Machine wash (listing)

White or pale curtains that still need a lining for blackout

3.9
Our verdict
Our verdictResearched

A pale panel pair with a dark backing so the front stays white. BGment's listings claim blackout and less heat and cold transfer, which is the maker's say-so. Check the header style, since BGment sells grommet and rod-pocket versions.

Best for White or pale curtains that still need a lining for blackout

Good
  • Pale color with a backing
  • Machine washable (listing)
Worth knowing
  • Insulation claims are BGment's own
  • Header style varies, check before ordering

Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you need a header style that is not clear from the listing.

Rod-pocket thermal blackout panels · 52x84 in panel pair (listing) · White liner, full light blocking (listing) · Machine wash cold (maker line)

A rod-pocket style that slides onto a plain rod

3.8
Our verdict
Our verdictResearched

A rod-pocket pair with a white liner, sold as 100% blackout in the listing. Rod pockets slide straight onto a rod, which suits a simple setup, but they do not glide as easily as grommets. The maker's lines differ in blackout percentage, so read this one.

Best for A rod-pocket style that slides onto a plain rod

Good
  • Rod pocket needs no rings
  • Liner for light blocking (listing)
Worth knowing
  • Rod pocket is harder to open and close than grommets
  • H.VERSAILTEX lines vary in blackout percentage

Who shouldn't buy it: Don't buy it if you want curtains that slide easily on a rod.

The honest bit
Curtains you already own, drawn at night, do much of the job; a thermal curtain does it better when it's long and wide enough to cover the whole frame and close to the wall. Makers' energy-saving percentages are their own claims. And keep curtains well clear of any heater: CPSC says to keep portable heaters at least three feet away from drapes.

Before you buy

Size for the whole frame.

Get panels wide enough to overlap in the middle when closed and long enough to reach the sill or floor. Gaps at the sides and top let the cold air fall into the room.

Build.

'Thermal' curtains usually have a dense woven or foam-backed layer. Blackout ones block light too, which helps sleep but darkens a room by day.

Use them right.

Open south-facing curtains on sunny days, close all of them at night, as the DOE suggests.

Care.

Check whether they're machine-washable; foam-backed liners can crack if washed hot or tumble-dried.

Safety.

Keep curtains at least three feet from space heaters, as CPSC advises.

How we choose

We verify every product's specifications against at least two independent sources, re-check its US price and stock on a schedule where we can track it automatically, and cross-check safety-relevant claims against official guidance. Every review is labeled Researched or Used and reviewed by us: where we've bought a product, or been sent it free, and used it ourselves, its review says which; where we haven't, our verdict is a considered spec-and-evidence comparison, not a hands-on test. Common questions

Do thermal curtains really keep heat in?

They reduce the chill from cold glass when they're closed at night and fit the window well. The DOE says to close curtains at night in winter and open south-facing ones during sunny days. Any energy-saving percentage on a package is the maker's own claim.

Are blackout curtains the same as thermal curtains?

Not always. Blackout curtains block light; thermal curtains are made to insulate. Many sold in the US claim both. The table shows what each maker says.

What size thermal curtains do I need?

Wide enough to overlap when closed (often two panels each about as wide as the window) and long enough to reach the sill or floor. A rod that extends past the frame helps them cover the edges.

How far should curtains be from a heater?

CPSC says: "Keep portable heaters at least three feet away from drapes, furniture, bedding and other combustible materials to prevent fires."
