Our review

ORORO's women's heated vest warms four zones from a rechargeable lithium battery and has three heat settings. This researched review covers the maker's stated runtimes, why they depend on the setting, how the battery recharges, and why a heated vest adds comfort to a cold house but does not replace layers or a warm room.

What it is and who it suits

ORORO's Women's Classic Heated Vest uses four carbon fiber heating elements, in the left and right pockets, the collar and the mid-back. The shell is 100 percent nylon with a water-resistance treatment over FELLEX insulation, and the page says it can be worn as a mid-layer or outer layer. The maker also describes it as machine washable.

It suits someone who is cold at home during an outage or in a chilly room, a cold-weather commute or outdoor chores, and wants warmth at the core without running a fuel heater. This review is researched, not tested. It relies on ORORO's product page, which carries its FAQ, and on National Weather Service cold-weather advice.

Battery and heat settings

The maker lists a 4800 mAh, 7.4 V, 35.4 Wh pack with LG cells, weighing 6.53 ounces. There are three settings, and ORORO states up to 10 working hours: about 3 hours on high, 6 on medium and 10 on low. The page notes that the 10-hour figure assumes all zones on the low setting. Dividing the pack's 35.4 Wh by those hours gives roughly 3.5 watts on low and 12 on high, which is our arithmetic, not the maker's figure.

So the headline runtime is a low-setting number. If you want high heat for an evening, expect about three hours from one battery. ORORO sells a larger 7,000 mAh battery that it rates at up to 13.5 hours on low, and says to buy a spare if you will spend long periods in sub-zero temperatures.

Charging and outages

The battery charges over USB-C with the included cable. ORORO says any charger works, recommends a 15 W (5V/3A) output and says a full charge takes about 4 hours; the charger is not included. That makes it easy to top up from a power bank or a power station during an outage, though a full recharge is a long wait. The battery also has a USB-A port for charging other devices, rated at 12 W. Because the pack is lithium, ORORO says to keep it in carry-on luggage when flying. Our lithium battery fire safety guide covers storing and charging it.

What it does for a cold house

The National Weather Service advises dressing in layers in extreme cold and changing into dry clothes when wet. A heated vest is one such layer and warms only the torso. It does not warm hands, feet or the room, and it does not treat hypothermia, which the NWS describes as a body temperature below 95°F that needs immediate medical attention. For a full plan, see our stay warm without power guide and winter storm preparedness guide.

How it compares with the other picks

On our heated clothing comparison, the nearest match is ORORO's men's heated vest, which our comparison lists with the same battery and stated runtime. The Venustas women's vest states the same 10, 6 and 3 hour split. DR.PREPARE's women's vest ships with a larger power bank and more heat zones. The ORORO choice is the lighter battery and a well-documented spec sheet.

Verdict and who should skip it

A sensible comfort layer for a cold house or cold chores, with honest runtimes if you read the low-setting caveat. ORORO lists a 3-year limited warranty on the heating elements and 1 year on the battery. Skip it if you need all-night heat from one battery, want a heater for a whole room, or expect it to be the only protection in a freezing home.

Questions

How long does the ORORO vest battery last?

ORORO says up to 10 hours on low, about 6 on medium and about 3 on high, from a 4800 mAh pack. The page notes the 10-hour figure assumes all zones on the low setting.

How do I recharge it during an outage?

Use any USB-C charger or power bank with the included cable. ORORO recommends a 15 W (5V/3A) output and says a full charge takes about 4 hours.

Can I wash it?

ORORO says it is machine washable: cold, in a mesh laundry bag, with no ironing, dry cleaning or machine drying.

Will it keep me warm without any other heat?

Not on its own. It warms four zones on your torso, and the National Weather Service advises layers and shelter. Use it with blankets, a warm room and safe heat.
