Our review

SentrySafe's HD4100 is a file-sized box with a key lock, sold with UL Classified fire protection and ETL Verified flood protection. This researched review reads the maker's exact wording, explains what UL 72 does and does not promise, and says what it takes to treat the box as one layer of document protection.

What it is and who it suits

SentrySafe lists the HD4100 with an interior of 11.5 by 12 by 8.1 inches, a 0.65 cubic foot capacity and room for up to 40 standard hanging folders, which are not included. It has an in-lid organizer for small items such as passports and a keyed lock, and weighs about 38.85 pounds. The maker's page is titled for the HD4100; the HD4100CG listing may be a color or retail variant of the same box, so match the model number when you buy.

It suits a household that wants birth certificates, deeds, insurance papers and similar originals in one place at home. This review is researched, not tested. It relies on SentrySafe's product page, the maker's warranty sheet for this line, and UL's published scope for UL 72.

The ratings, in the maker's words

For fire, SentrySafe says: "UL Classified to protect your valuables in a fire for 1/2 hour up to 1550°F (843°C)." For water, it says: "ETL Verified to protect your valuable items from flood damage up to 72 hours." That is the full claim. The page does not use the phrase UL 72, name a class such as Class 350, or state the interior temperature limit, so this review does not add them.

UL's standards catalog describes UL 72 as test procedures for the fire-resistance classification of record protection equipment. It says the tests show performance during a fire, not whether the equipment is fit for use afterward, and that locking mechanisms' burglary resistance is outside its scope.

What the box does not promise

SentrySafe says the privacy key lock deters unwanted viewers or children and that these safes provide basic protection, not protection from tool attacks. The page lists digital media protection among its features but gives no interior temperature limit, so ask the maker before trusting it with drives or discs. A half-hour rating is a laboratory test, not a forecast of your house fire, and the water claim is a stated duration, not a guarantee.

The maker's warranty sheet for this line is a limited one-year warranty. It says the warranty does not cover damage from fire or water except on products rated for it, and that the remedy is repair or replacement only.

How it compares with the other picks

On our fireproof document safe comparison, the closest rivals are the SentrySafe key-lock document box, the Honeywell fire chest and the Amazon Basics fire chest. Each page states its own wording, so compare the named test, the time, the temperature and whether a water claim is made at all. The ENGPOW document bag is a bag rather than a box. The HD4100 is the heavy, file-sized option, and its weight makes it a poor grab-and-go choice.

Using it as part of a plan

Keep the originals you cannot replace in the box, and keep photos or scans stored somewhere else, such as a cloud account or a relative's house. Our family emergency plan guide and emergency kit checklist cover the documents worth gathering. Put a small portable pouch in the go-bag for the few papers you would need to leave quickly.

Verdict and who should skip it

A sensible home file box if you read its ratings as stated: a half-hour fire classification and a 72-hour flood verification, with a basic lock. Skip it if you need something you can carry out the door, if you want a burglary-rated safe, or if you need a one-hour or longer fire rating, which this page does not claim.

A researched review, built from the maker's specs, manual and US listings; facts checked 2 Nov 2026. Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it if you need to grab it and go: use a portable bag too.

How this review works

This is a Researched review: we haven't used this product. We check every specification against at least two independent sources, re-check the US price on a schedule where we can track it automatically, and say plainly who it isn't for. Commissions never change a rating.

Questions

Is the SentrySafe HD4100 UL 72 rated?

SentrySafe says UL Classified for 1/2 hour up to 1550°F. Its page does not use the words UL 72 or give a class number, so this review states only the maker's wording.

Will it protect documents in a flood?

SentrySafe says ETL Verified to protect valuables from flood damage up to 72 hours. That is the maker's claim, so keep important papers in a sealed bag inside as well.

Does it hold hanging files?

Yes. SentrySafe says it holds up to 40 standard hanging folders, but the folders are not included. There is also an in-lid organizer for small items like passports.

Is the lock burglar-proof?

No. SentrySafe describes a privacy key lock that deters unwanted viewers or children, and says the safe is not intended for tool attacks.
