Our review
Gas One's GS-3400P is a single-burner portable stove that runs on an 8-ounce butane cartridge or, with its adapter, a 16.4-ounce propane cylinder, rated by Gas One at 8,000 BTU and 3.3 pounds. Being able to burn either fuel is the preparedness case: in a long outage you cook with whichever one you can still get. It is for outdoor use only. This review covers the fuels, the safety features and the limits.
Who it is for
The GS-3400P suits a household that wants one cheap, light stove for an outage, a tailgate and a camping trip. Gas One lists it as an 8,000 BTU portable dual-fuel camp stove, 13.5 by 11.2 by 4.4 inches, 3.3 pounds, with a metal body and an enamel steel drip pan, piezo ignition that removes the need for matches, and a wind ring around the burner. Fuel is not included. It takes an 8-ounce butane canister or a 16.4-ounce propane tank, the green camping cylinder sold in every hardware store.
Our cooking without power guide explains where a stove like this fits: outside, on a stable surface, with the propane or butane stored outside too.
Two fuels, and why that matters
Butane cartridges are compact and the stove latches one in like a classic butane burner. Propane cylinders are cheaper per cook, easier to find across the US, and work in colder weather, where butane loses pressure. Gas One's wording is that you can run it on butane or connect to propane for the flexibility to cook with the fuel that fits the moment. The propane connection is through a regulator and hose; Gas One's manual notes the hose is for propane cylinders only.
One caution on accessories: in September 2021 the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of Gas One propane adapter hoses, models 50140 and variants from two 2020 batches, because the hose can swell during use causing gas to leak, posing a fire hazard. If you own an older separate Gas One adapter hose, check it against that notice before using it.
Safety features and the outdoor rule
Gas One lists a shut-off that stops gas flow if irregular flow or pressure is detected, a system that ejects the butane canister in the same condition, and a safety lever that will not latch the canister unless the dial is in the off position. Ventilation openings in the body help keep the cartridge cool.
The stove is marked for outdoor use only, and that is not fine print. Any fuel-burning stove makes carbon monoxide; used indoors, in a garage or in a tent it can kill. Cook outside, away from windows and doors, and keep a working CO alarm in the house regardless; our carbon monoxide poisoning guide has the official wording. Gas One's manual also says not to operate the stove below freezing, which limits it as a winter-outage stove unless you can cook in a sheltered outdoor spot above 32°F.
Limits to know before you buy
It is one burner, so a pot of water and a pan of eggs are sequential. At 8,000 BTU it boils water for a family in reasonable time but is no match for a two-burner propane stove's output. Gas One does not publish a burn time per cartridge, and we could not find a CSA or other listing mark on its page, nor confirmation that a carrying case is included, so do not assume one. Warranty is one year.
Store cartridges and cylinders outdoors or in a detached shed, never in the house, and never leave a butane cartridge latched in the stove.
How it compares, and the verdict
On our camp stove comparison, the Coleman Triton two-burner is the family outage stove: two burners, propane only, more output. The Gas One butane stove is the single-fuel version of this one, and the Coleman butane burner and Jetboil Flash are the other compact options. The GS-3400P is the pick for anyone who wants fuel flexibility in a light package.
Verdict: a sensible, inexpensive backup stove whose dual-fuel design is its reason to exist. Skip it if you need two burners, if you will cook in freezing weather, or if you want a stove with a published listing mark and burn time.

Can I use the Gas One GS-3400P indoors during a power outage?
No. Gas One marks it for outdoor use only. Fuel-burning stoves produce carbon monoxide, which is deadly indoors, in a garage or in a tent. Cook outside and keep a CO alarm in the house.
What fuel does the GS-3400P use?
Gas One lists an 8-ounce butane canister or a 16.4-ounce propane tank, connected through its regulator and hose. Fuel is not included.
Does the GS-3400P work in cold weather?
Gas One's manual says not to operate the stove below 32°F. Propane holds pressure better than butane in the cold, but the maker's limit still applies.
Is the Gas One stove affected by a recall?
Not the stove. The CPSC recalled certain Gas One 50140-series propane adapter hoses in September 2021 for leaking. Check any separate adapter hose you own against that notice.
