One hundred Mylar bags in three sizes, pint, quart and gallon, each with an oxygen absorber sized for it (100cc, 300cc and 500cc) and a label. That takes the guesswork out of matching absorbers to bags, which is where beginners usually go wrong. The bags are thinner than Wallaby's at 7 mil, so keep them inside a bucket.

Our review

PackFreshUSA's 100-piece box set bundles 7 mil Mylar bags in three sizes with an oxygen absorber matched to each size and a label for every bag. It is a sensible way to start long-term dry food storage, as long as you own a heat sealer and only pack truly dry foods. This review covers what is in the box, the limits and who should skip it.

What is in the box

PackFreshUSA, which says it manufactures its own packaging, lists the set as 30 pint bags (6 by 8 inches), 40 quart bags (8 by 12 inches) and 30 gallon bags (10 by 14 inches). All are 7 mil per side. The oxygen absorbers come in 10-packs and are sized to the bags: 30 at 100cc, 40 at 300cc and 30 at 500cc. The maker adds an oxygen indicator in each 10-pack, 100 adhesive labels and a printed long-term food storage guide.

The pairing is the main appeal. Beginners often guess at absorber size, and here each bag size already has a matching absorber, so there is less to work out before you start filling.

Strengths

Mixed sizes suit mixed pantries: pints for spices, sugar or dried herbs, quarts for lentils or pasta, gallons for rice or beans. The 7 mil wall is the thicker end of what PackFreshUSA sells, and USU Extension explains why foil laminate pouches work: the foil layer dramatically reduces the transmission of oxygen and moisture through the film.

USU also says rice kept at a constant 70°F with oxygen absorbers will store well for up to 10 years, which is the kind of result this system is built for. The labels help too, since a date and contents on every bag makes rotation easy.

Limits and what you still need

The set contains no sealer. PackFreshUSA says all Mylar bags must be heat-sealed, and that an iron or a hair-straightening iron will do the job. Its own page also notes the absorbers come ten to a pack, so if you only need six, the rest should go into a mason jar or be vacuum sealed to keep them usable.

The maker suggests putting sealed bags in a plastic container for physical protection and storing them in a cool, dark place off the ground. Mice and sharp corners are the real enemies of a thin bag, so plan on a bucket or bin.

Safety: dry foods only

Oxygen removal is not a substitute for refrigeration or proper drying. USU Extension warns that vacuum packaging is not a food preservation method by itself, that food needing refrigeration must still be kept cold, and that removing oxygen increases the ability of botulism bacteria to grow. It adds that moisture and temperature are the two critical factors in food storage, and that dried foods should be cooled and conditioned before packing.

So keep this system to dry staples such as white rice, dried beans, sugar, pasta and dry milk. For storage basics see our long-term food storage guide and emergency food storage guide.

How it compares

On our food storage containers comparison, the closest rival is the Wallaby 10 mil gallon bag set, which is thicker but gallon-only. Choose Wallaby if you store one staple in bulk; choose PackFreshUSA for variety and matched absorbers. The Gamma Seal bucket and lid on the same page are not rivals: they are the outer layer that protects either bag type.

Compare prices on the day, since the retailer and pack size both vary.

Verdict

A good starter kit for a household packing several dry foods into different sizes, provided you accept that the bags are thinner than the heaviest options and belong inside a bucket. Skip it if you will pack only one staple in bulk, if you do not want to buy a sealer, or if you plan to store anything moist or oily.

Who shouldn't buy this

Don't buy it if you're packing big amounts of one staple: gallon-only bags are simpler.

Questions

Do I need a heat sealer for these bags?

Yes. PackFreshUSA says all of its Mylar bags must be heat-sealed, and that an iron or a hair-straightening iron works. A sealer is not included in the set.

Can I store any food in Mylar with oxygen absorbers?

No. USU Extension warns that removing oxygen can let botulism bacteria grow in foods that need refrigeration or are moist. Stick to dry, shelf-stable staples.

How long will rice last in these bags?

USU Extension says rice stored at a constant 70°F with oxygen absorbers will store well for up to 10 years. Cooler storage can extend that, and your result depends on dryness and storage conditions.

What do I do with unused oxygen absorbers?

PackFreshUSA says they come in packs of ten and unused ones may be stored in a mason jar or vacuum sealed, so they do not spend their capacity on room air.
