Uncharted's SEVENTY2 range is the premium end of ready-made kits, with better gear than budget bags. The Core is the cheaper version; its page doesn't say how many people it's for.

Our review

Uncharted Supply Co.'s SEVENTY2 Core is the one-person, lower-cost version of its SEVENTY2 survival pack: the same 22-item insert of labeled pockets, with a crank radio, tent, first aid, food and purification tablets, in a water-resistant tarpaulin backpack weighing 12.3 pounds by the maker's figure. Four labeled pockets ship empty. This review covers what is in it, what Uncharted left out, and who should buy the full kit instead.

Who it is for

The Core is for someone who wants a premium, thought-through bag without assembling it from parts, and who is willing to fill a few gaps. Uncharted describes it as 72 hours of survival essentials for one person at an accessible price, with the same insert as the original SEVENTY2 and a streamlined set of contents that reduces redundancies while keeping every critical capability. The backpack is 600-denier tarpaulin, sewn rather than welded, which Uncharted says makes it water-resistant rather than fully waterproof.

What you get is a system rather than a pile: Uncharted says more than 80 survival tools organized by use in labeled pockets, so that under stress you reach for the pocket marked for the job. Our go-bag checklist is the list to compare it against.

What is inside

Uncharted's contents list runs to 22 items, including a first aid kit, a survival tent, a mylar emergency blanket, 100 feet of paracord, an Uncharted air mask, two chemical light sticks, survival food, a crank radio with NOAA weather, a water bottle and five Aquatabs purification tablets. The pack with insert measures 11.5 by 20.5 by 5.5 inches at 12.3 pounds.

Four pockets are labeled but ship empty in the Core: lighter, matches, flashlight and water filter. Uncharted's reasoning is that the knife includes a ferro-rod fire starter, the crank radio has a built-in flashlight, and chem lights are backup light, with purification tablets for water. That is defensible, but a real flashlight or headlamp, a lighter and a small water filter are cheap additions that most people should make on day one. Uncharted notes contents may differ from photos as suppliers change.

What to know about the mask and the food

Uncharted's mask is described on its own page as a reusable mask with an N99-compliant carbon filter. That is the maker's wording, not a NIOSH approval; it does not carry a NIOSH approval number, so for wildfire smoke we would add a NIOSH-approved N95 from our N95 mask comparison. The survival food's calorie count is not given on the Core page, so plan on adding a food bar and water; five purification tablets treat a few liters, not three days' worth.

Uncharted's site repeats a claim that most survival situations resolve within 72 hours. It gives no source for the figure, so we do not repeat it as fact. The three-day frame is Ready.gov's standard kit horizon, which is reason enough.

How it compares with the other picks

On our go-bag comparison, the EVERLIT two-person 72-hour kit covers a couple for far less, and the Ready America 70180 is the cheapest one-person starter. Within Uncharted's own range, the full SEVENTY2 adds a water filtration system, flashlight, stormproof matches and a fire starter at 11 pounds, and the SEVENTY2 Pro is a two-person kit in a waterproof pack at 16 pounds.

Oddly, Uncharted's listed weight for the Core, 12.3 pounds, is heavier than the 11 pounds it lists for the fuller original. Take both as approximate.

Verdict

A well-organized premium bag that gets most of a one-person kit right and labels the gaps honestly. Buy it if you value the system and will add a light, a lighter, a filter and more food.

Skip it if you are on a budget, if you need a kit for two or more people, or if you want the bag to be complete the day it arrives, in which case the full SEVENTY2 or the Pro is the better buy.

Questions

How many people is the SEVENTY2 Core for?

One. Uncharted describes it as 72 hours of survival essentials for one person. The SEVENTY2 Pro is the two-person kit.

What is missing from the SEVENTY2 Core?

Uncharted says four labeled pockets ship empty: lighter, matches, flashlight and water filter. The knife has a ferro rod and the radio a built-in light, but adding a light, a lighter and a filter is sensible.

Is the SEVENTY2 Core backpack waterproof?

No. Uncharted says the 600-denier tarpaulin pack is sewn rather than welded, making it water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. The Pro's pack is the waterproof one.

Is the mask in the kit an N95?

Uncharted describes its mask as reusable with an N99-compliant carbon filter, but that is the maker's wording and not a NIOSH approval. For smoke, add a NIOSH-approved N95.
