Our review

The Harvest Right Small is the entry size of Harvest Right's home freeze dryers: 6 to 10 pounds of fresh food per batch on four trays, a 110-volt outlet on its own 15-amp circuit, 91 pounds, a vacuum pump in the box and a 3-year limited warranty. This researched review reads Harvest Right's pages, sets out what a freeze dryer is for in a preparedness plan, and says who should buy the Medium instead.

What Harvest Right lists

Harvest Right's home freeze dryer page lists the Small at 6 to 10 pounds of fresh food per batch across 434 square inches of tray space on four trays, and up to 1,800 pounds of fresh food a year, which Harvest Right says would mean running it four times a week for 50 weeks. It measures 16.5 by 18.5 by 26.8 inches without the door and vacuum fitting, weighs 91 pounds, and ships in one 172-pound package to physical addresses only. A small industrial vacuum pump is included at no extra cost, the oil needs changing every 20 to 30 batches, and the warranty is 3 years limited.

Its sizing guide pins the Small to individuals, couples and households of 1 to 3 people, on a standard 110-volt outlet with a dedicated 15-amp circuit, and suggests it for healthy snacking, leftovers and light camping prep. Harvest Right says freeze-dried food lasts up to 25 years when packaged properly.

What it does for a preparedness plan

A freeze dryer builds a store before an outage; it does nothing during one, since each batch takes many hours of wall power and a dedicated circuit. Its value is turning garden produce, bulk meat on sale and cooked leftovers into shelf-stable meals you already like, in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, instead of buying commercial emergency food kits. Our guide to whether a freeze dryer is worth it runs the arithmetic, and the long-term food storage guide covers packaging.

Ten pounds a batch is a few dinners' worth. A household that wants to lay in months of meals will spend many weekends feeding the Small; Harvest Right's own 1,800-pound annual figure assumes near-daily use.

Space, power and noise

At about 27 inches tall and 91 pounds, the Small fits a counter or a sturdy cart, with the pump beside it and room for the door to swing. The dedicated 15-amp circuit is the thing to check before ordering: a shared kitchen circuit will trip. The pump and the compressor run for the whole cycle, so a garage, laundry room or basement is a better home than a kitchen. Harvest Right does not give a noise figure.

The oil pump needs its oil changed every 20 to 30 batches, which Harvest Right says takes about two minutes. Keep a bottle of oil and a filter on hand.

What the page does not say

Harvest Right's pages give no cycle time, no power draw in watts and no figures for the water removed per batch, so we cannot quote running cost. The Small's capacity also appears with a lower 5 to 9 pound figure on a newer compact model page, so check which unit a listing describes before buying.

How it compares, and who should skip it

The Harvest Right Medium does 10 to 15 pounds a batch on the same 110-volt, 15-amp supply, and Harvest Right suggests it for families of 2 to 5; it costs more but halves the weekends per pound. Our freeze dryer comparison lines up the four sizes.

Skip the Small if you process a garden harvest or buy meat in bulk, where the Medium or Large earns its price. Skip any freeze dryer if what you want is a few weeks of emergency food: a bucket of commercial meals is cheaper, faster and needs no circuit.
