SunGoldPower SGR-10K20E review

SunGoldPower 10kW 48V Off-Grid Solar Kit, 20.48kWh, 12 x 450W Bifacial Panels (SGR-10K20E)

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.5 / 5

The largest off-grid kit here: a 10,000-watt split-phase inverter, 20.48 kWh of lithium battery in an enclosed cabinet and twelve 450-watt bifacial panels. That's twice the storage of the 8,000-watt kit, which matters for getting through the night and cloudy days. At this size, plan the install with a licensed electrician from the start.

Our review

SunGoldPower's SGR-10K20E is the largest off-grid kit we list: a 10,000-watt split-phase inverter, four 51.2-volt 100 Ah LiFePO4 batteries housed in a cabinet, plus twelve bifacial 450 W panels. This researched review reads SunGoldPower's kit and inverter pages, explains what 20.48 kWh buys you in an outage, and why the install is a project from day one.

What SunGoldPower ships

The kit page lists one 10,000-watt 48-volt DC inverter with 120/240-volt AC output that can be paralleled up to six units, twelve 450-watt bifacial N-type monocrystalline panels, four 100 Ah 51.2-volt LiFePO4 batteries (model SG48100P, whose manual title gives 5.12 kWh each) and an enclosed battery cabinet. Wiring parts are a 50-foot solar extension cable set, twelve sets of Z-brackets, a 300 A DC breaker, a 25 A PV breaker and two sets of 2/0 AWG cables for the breaker-to-battery and inverter runs.

SunGoldPower describes it as an all-in-one off-grid system designed for remote homes, reliable backup power or small off-grid projects. Four batteries at 5.12 kWh give the 20.48 kWh in the name.

The inverter's numbers

The inverter page lists a rated output of 10,000 W with a 20,000 W peak and a loaded motor capacity of 6 HP, two built-in MPPT controllers with a maximum open-circuit voltage of 500 V DC at each input, up to 200 A of battery charging, and split-phase 120/240 V or single-phase 120 V output. SunGoldPower says it is certified UL 1741 by ETL for off-grid solar systems.

It also quotes a 99.9 percent MPPT tracking efficiency and a 92 percent maximum battery-inverter efficiency, and says up to six units in parallel reach 60 kW. The page's FAQ puts it plainly: a 240-volt inverter is designed to handle heavy household loads safely when installed correctly. The last three words are the point.

What 20.48 kWh means in an outage

Twenty kilowatt-hours is roughly two thirds of what an average US home uses in a day, so with the big loads switched off it will run a household's essentials, a well pump and a modest amount of heating or cooling for a day or two without sun. Twelve panels at 450 W is 5,400 W of array, which on a clear day refills a large share of that. SunGoldPower gives no daily yield figure for this kit, unlike its 6,500 W kit, so run your own estimate for your latitude and season.

Our 90-day blackout plan and power outage checklist help you decide which circuits matter; that list is what your electrician will wire to the inverter.

The install

Twelve panels need roughly 290 square feet of roof or ground mount. The cabinet holds four batteries and needs a dry, ventilated spot near the inverter. Everything from the PV string to the 240-volt output connects to the house wiring, so plan on a licensed electrician, a permit and an inspection, and ask early whether your utility allows an off-grid system with a grid connection for charging.

SunGoldPower's warranty page says its products carry 1 to 25 years depending on the item and excludes repair attempted outside an authorized facility. The kit page gives no per-component term in text, so get the inverter, battery and panel warranties in writing.

How it compares, and who should skip it

The 6,500 W SGM-6510M kit has half the battery and six smaller panels, and SunGoldPower pitches it at cabins and shops using around 266 kWh a month; this kit is for a house. The rest of our off-grid solar kit comparison sits between them. A whole-house generator handles bigger loads for less money up front but needs fuel, and a home backup battery is simpler if you only want a day of backup.

Skip it if you want something you can set up yourself, if you have nowhere to put twelve panels, or if your outages are short: the money is better spent on a smaller battery and a generator.

Questions

How many panels does the SGR-10K20E have and how much space do they need?

Twelve 450-watt bifacial N-type panels, listed with twelve sets of Z-brackets. Allow around 290 square feet of unshaded roof or ground mount, plus access for cleaning snow off in winter.

Is the battery cabinet included?

Yes. The kit page lists one enclosed battery cabinet with the four SG48100P batteries, plus a 300 A DC breaker and two sets of 2/0 AWG cables for the battery and inverter connections.

Can I expand it later?

SunGoldPower says the inverter can be paralleled up to six units for 60 kW of output, and the batteries are modular 5.12 kWh units. Any expansion is more electrician work, so plan the cabinet and conduit with growth in mind.

Is it certified?

SunGoldPower says the inverter is certified UL 1741 by ETL for off-grid solar systems. Ask for the panel and battery listings too; inspectors in many areas will want them.
