SunGoldPower SGM-6510M review

SunGoldPower 6500W 48V Off-Grid Solar Kit, 10.24kWh, 6 x 370W Panels (SGM-6510M)

By Tom Calder

Our verdict · Researched
4.5 / 5

The step up that matters for a house: 120/240-volt split output, so a well pump or other 240-volt load can run, plus 10.24 kWh of lithium battery and six 370-watt panels. The battery is double the smaller kits' and the panels refill it faster.

Our review

SunGoldPower's SGM-6510M kit bundles a 6,500-watt 48-volt inverter with 120/240-volt output, two 51.2-volt 100 Ah lithium batteries and six 370-watt panels, with the breakers, cables and brackets to wire it. This researched review reads SunGoldPower's kit and inverter pages, says what the kit can and cannot do, and who should hire an electrician before buying.

What is in the box

SunGoldPower's kit page lists one 6,500-watt 48-volt DC inverter with 120/240-volt AC output, six 370-watt monocrystalline solar panels and two 100 Ah 51.2-volt lithium batteries. The wiring parts are listed too: a 50-foot set of solar extension cables for the inverter's PV input, six sets of mounting Z-brackets, a 160 A DC breaker, a 25 A PV breaker and a 250 A busbar. The page links manuals for the inverter, the SG48100M battery (which its manual title calls 5.12 kWh) and the panels.

Two 5.12 kWh batteries make the 10.24 kWh in the kit's name. SunGoldPower describes it as a starter package for a complete off-grid cabin or shop, and says the array will produce around 8.88 kWh a day based on 4 hours of sun. That is a maker's estimate, not a measurement, and winter days in much of the US give less than 4 sun hours.

The inverter: 240 volts and a UL listing

The inverter page lists a rated output of 6,500 W with a peak of 13,000 VA, split-phase 120/240 V or single-phase 120 V output, two built-in MPPT solar controllers with a maximum open-circuit voltage of 550 V DC, and up to 140 A of battery charging. SunGoldPower says it is UL 1741 listed by ETL for off-grid solar systems, which is the listing an inspector will usually ask about.

The split-phase output is the reason to pick this kit over the smaller ones on our off-grid solar kit comparison: a well pump, an electric dryer or a 240-volt heat pump needs it. The page also describes four charging and output modes (hybrid, utility priority, solar priority and solar only) and a time-slot function for charging on off-peak rates when the grid is connected.

Sizing it against a house

SunGoldPower says the kit generally works for cabins, shops and RVs that use around 266 kWh a month. The average US home uses far more than that, so treat this as a system for essentials or for a small, efficient building, not a whole-house replacement. Our guide to whether a power station will run a refrigerator walks through the arithmetic of watts and hours; the same method applies here with a much bigger battery.

Battery depth matters more than panel count in an outage. 10.24 kWh will carry a refrigerator, a freezer, lights, a router and phone charging through a night with room to spare, but a 240-volt well pump or a space heater eats into it fast. The inverter page says up to six units can be paralleled for 39 kW if you outgrow it.

Installation is not a weekend job

Nothing on the kit page says it is plug-and-play, and it is not. Wiring a 48-volt battery bank, a 550-volt PV string and a 240-volt inverter output into a building is work for a licensed electrician, with a permit and an inspection in most jurisdictions. The breakers and busbar are included, but the panel mounting hardware is Z-brackets for a flat or sloped surface, so you still need a roof or ground-mount plan.

SunGoldPower's warranty page says warranty periods run from 1 to 25 years depending on the product, and lists attempted repair by anyone other than an authorized facility among the exclusions. The kit page itself gives no warranty term in text, so ask SunGoldPower for the inverter, battery and panel terms in writing before you order.

How it compares, and who should skip it

The SunGoldPower 10 kW kit doubles the battery to 20.48 kWh in an enclosed cabinet and adds twelve 450-watt bifacial panels; it is the one for a home that wants to run heavy loads for days. For a grid-tied house that wants backup without an installation project, a home backup battery such as the EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra is simpler, and a standby generator covers bigger loads.

Skip it if you only want to keep a few lights, a refrigerator and your phones going: a power station with a folding panel does that for a fraction of the effort. Skip it too if you have no 240-volt loads, since a smaller 120-volt kit will do.

Questions

Does the SGM-6510M kit need an electrician?

Yes in practice. It connects a 48-volt battery bank, a high-voltage solar string and a 120/240-volt inverter to a building's wiring, which needs a licensed electrician, a permit and an inspection almost everywhere in the US. The breakers and busbar are included but the labor is not.

How much power will the panels make each day?

SunGoldPower estimates around 8.88 kWh a day based on 4 hours of sun from the six 370-watt panels. Short winter days, shade and snow all reduce that, so size the battery for the worst week, not the best.

Can it run a well pump or an electric dryer?

The inverter has split-phase 120/240-volt output, rated at 6,500 W with a 13,000 VA peak, so 240-volt loads are within reach. Check your pump's starting current against the peak figure and ask your electrician to confirm.

What is the warranty?

SunGoldPower's warranty page says its products carry 1 to 25 years depending on the item, and the kit page does not state terms for each component. Get the inverter, battery and panel warranties in writing before buying.
